MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa. (KCRG/Gray News) – A mother in Iowa learned of her son’s death on social media after he crashed while returning home from serving in the National Guard.
SPC Marin Rose, 19, was killed in a crash last week. He was serving as a transportation driver with the 1133rd Transportation Company based in Iowa City.
Vickie Kautzky learned of the fatal crash after someone posted a picture of it in a social media group.
Kautzky commented on the picture “Oh gawd, my son was coming home [from] there and I can’t get ahold, do you know what color car?????”
The next day, Kautzky posted a heartfelt message confirming her fears from the day before.
“Laying rumors and second guessing to rest. Yes, it was our son/brother/loved one who was involved in the fatal accident on Wednesday, north of Mt. Pleasant,” she wrote.
She went on to share her grief and memories of her son.
“If I could take his place, I would. I wish to not wake up if it meant he was here,” she wrote. “We, as a family, are numb. We have cried and laughed and cried together some more. No way in hell should a 19 year old with so much life and love…..omg, so much love…have that taken from him. From all of us.”
Kautzky says she believes he fell asleep at the wheel, crossed the median, and hit a northbound semi head-on.
