Liverpool star Diogo Jota has died aged 28 after his Lamborghini crashed off the road in northern Spain – just two weeks after he married his childhood sweetheart.

The Portuguese forward was travelling in the supercar with his footballer brother Andre, 26, who also died in the crash.

The Lamborghini\\\’s tyre is believed to have burst while overtaking on the A-52, around 70 miles west of the historic city of Valladolid. The car went off the road, rolled and then burst into flames early this morning.

Jota had just married Rute Cardoso, a mother of three, and described himself as the luckiest man in the world to be her husband.

The incident happened on the A-52 in Zamora province. The Spanish road is a major route for drivers travelling from northern Portugal.

Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash and the two deaths at around 12.35am on Thursday.

‘Operation Room 1-1-2 Castilla y León received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A vehicle was reported to have crashed and caught fire,’ a statement said.

‘1-1-2 has informed the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Centre (CCU) about the accident.

\\\’From there, the Emergency Medical Services (UME) and Primary Care Medical Services (MAP) from the Mombuey Medical Centre were sent to the scene, where they confirmed the two had died at the scene.

The tragic news comes just two weeks after Jota married his long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso in his hometown of Porto.

The Portuguese national football team said they were “deeply saddened” by the death of Liverpool striker Diogo, adding that he was “not only a great player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his teammates and opponents”.

His death was confirmed by Pedro Proenca, head of the Portuguese Football Federation.

He said in a statement: ‘The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are deeply saddened by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva this morning in Spain.

‘Not only was Diogo Jota a great player, with almost 50 caps for the Portuguese national team A, he was also an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, a person who spread joy and was a shining example in his own community.
